Kampung Bagan Buaya upgrades community spaces

Kampung Bagan Buaya gains new covered sepak takraw courts and playground, boosting local recreation and tourism.

Kampung Bagan Buaya, a vibrant community in Jawi, has transformed its recreational landscape with newly covered sepak takraw courts and a children’s playground, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow announced.

Unveiled during a Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house on 6 April, these upgrades replace a dilapidated court, offering residents weather-proof spaces for leisure.

The enhancements reflect Kampung Bagan Buaya’s commitment to fostering community engagement and improving quality of life.

Beyond recreation, the area is gaining traction as a tourist destination, with the Changkat Fishermen’s Jetty drawing visitors.

These developments signal a bright future for Kampung Bagan Buaya, blending local vitality with economic growth.

Kampung Bagan Buaya’s recreational revival

Chow highlighted the upgrades, noting that Kampung Bagan Buaya previously had two sepak takraw courts, only one with a roof.

Now, both courts are covered, alongside a new playground, creating versatile spaces for residents.

“These facilities allow locals to enjoy activities regardless of weather,” Chow said at the open house.

Jawi assemblyman Jason H’ng Mooi Lye spearheaded the project, securing RM161,550 from the housing and local government ministry.

The funds covered the roof, wiring, and court repainting. H’ng thanked village development officer Ong Hong Boon for facilitating the approval, ensuring swift progress.

“Now, the community can engage in activities without worrying about heat or rain,” H’ng said.

As local government chairman, he emphasized the importance of accessible recreational spaces for Kampung Bagan Buaya’s residents.

The Changkat Fishermen’s Jetty, another local gem, is attracting tourists, Chow noted. Upgraded facilities, including food and beverage stalls, enhance visitor comfort.

These improvements position the jetty as a key attraction, boosting the local economy.

The Nibong Tebal Arena, opened on 25 January, adds to the area’s appeal. Located on Jalan Bukit Panchor, it offers world-class facilities for athletes and community events, forming part of the ambitious Sports City project in Batu Kawan.

The Sports City, encompassing Batu Kawan Stadium and surrounding areas, will feature an aquatic centre, racetrack, academy, and commercial spaces.

Chow acknowledged the financial challenges, suggesting residential and commercial elements to offset costs.

The Penang Stadium Corporation issued a Request for Proposal for Sports City on 21 November last year, closing on 7 April.

“We hope the private sector sees this as viable,” Chow said, emphasizing the project’s private initiative nature.

This long-tail vision, “Batu Kawan Sports City development,” aims to elevate Kampung Bagan Buaya’s regional profile.

Tourism growth at the Changkat Fishermen’s Jetty complements these efforts. Enhanced amenities cater to visitors, fostering economic opportunities for locals.

The jetty’s rise as a must-visit spot underscores Kampung Bagan Buaya’s evolving identity.

Kampung Bagan Buaya’s new facilities mark a step towards a dynamic future. The covered courts, playground, and jetty upgrades enhance daily life and draw visitors, while the Sports City project promises long-term impact.
